Join Safe Home Ireland for the inaugural National Famine Way challenge

Safe Home Ireland, the Emigrant support service in Ireland, whose patron is President Michael D Higgins, recently announced details of a Fundraising Walk, The Long Road Home – Ag Siúl le Chéile.

This walk will begin at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum at Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 at 10.30am on Friday May 26 and finish at the National Famine Museum in Strokestown on Sunday June 4.

To symbolise the work of the organisation, the ‘Long Road Home’ Walk will be done in reverse (from Dublin to Strokestown ) to reflect Safe Home’s work in assisting people to ‘come home’.

Returning to Ireland for Irish emigrants can be considered “a long road”, a journey that for many started on the day they went away.

The Walk: The National Famine Way is a 165km cross county trail that commemorates the heart-breaking walk of 1,490 Strokestown tenants, men, women and children who were marched from Strokestown House Estate in Co. Roscommon to Dublin Docklands in May 1847 or ‘Black 47’, one of the worst years of suffering of the Great Irish Famine, after they failed to pay their rent.

Established in 2000, Safe Home Ireland is an Irish emigrant support service that provides a range of services to recently returned Irish emigrants and those who may be considering moving back home in the future.
