Nominations open for the Cathaoirleach’s Awards 2023
Applications are now open for the Cathaoirleach’s Awards 2023 which are an annual initiative to acknowledge the commitment of individuals and groups who participate in community and voluntary activities in County Galway and to recognise the significant impact their actions have on the quality of life in their communities. The Awards are a joint venture between Galway County Council and the Public Participation Network, which has over 1,000 Member Groups carrying out a range of community and voluntary activities across the County.
Cllr Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher, Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway said: “I am delighted to launch these Awards for 2023 – they have been an annual initiative for over 10 years now and provide a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge and reward the amazing community and voluntary work happening around the County and give something back to our dedicated volunteers”. Vincent Lyons of Galway County PPN (Public Participation Network ) stated: “The 9 Award Categories give us an opportunity to showcase the initiatives and projects undertaken annually by the community & voluntary sector across a range of areas such as Sport, Heritage, Environment, Arts and Culture, Community and Social Inclusion, and the promotion of the Irish language”. Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council, stated; “These Awards provide an opportunity for Galway County Council and Galway County PPN to recognise the unique value and contribution of volunteers to our County, and acknowledge their impact on community wellbeing and quality of life, and the pride of place instilled by their activities”.
The winners of each Award Category will be announced by the Cathaoirleach at the Mayoral Charity Ball on 27th May. Each Winner will receive a specially commissioned hand-crafted Award and Certificate with a cash prize of €500 towards their work.

Tá iarratais ar oscailt anois do Ghradaim an Chathaoirligh 2023 ar tionscnamh bliantúil iad chun aitheantas a thabhairt do thiomantas daoine aonair agus grúpaí a ghlacann páirt i ngníomhaíochtaí pobail agus deonacha i gContae na Gaillimhe agus chun aitheantas a thabhairt don tionchar suntasach a bhíonn ag a ngníomhartha ar saol an phobail. Is comhfhiontar iad na Gradaim idir Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe agus an Líonra Rannpháirtíochta Poiblí, a bhfuil os cionn 1,000 Ballghrúpa i mbun raon gníomhaíochtaí pobail agus deonacha ar fud an Chontae.
Dúirt an Comhairleoir Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher, Cathaoirleach Chontae na Gaillimhe: “Tá lúcháir orm na Gradaim seo do 2023 a sheoladh – is tionscnamh bliantúil iad le breis agus 10 mbliana anois agus cuireann siad deis iontach ar fáil aitheantas agus luach saothair a thabhairt don phobal iontach a bhfuil obair dheonach ar siúl acu ar fud an Chontae agus rud éigin a thabhairt ar ais dár oibrithe deonacha”. Dúirt Vincent Lyons ó PPN Chontae na Gaillimhe “Tugann na 9 gCatagóir Gradaim deis dúinn na tionscnaimh agus na tionscadail a dtugann an earnáil phobail agus dheonach orthu go bliantúil a thaispeáint thar raon réimsí mar Spórt, Oidhreacht, Comhshaol, Ealaíona. agus Cultúr, Cuimsiú Pobail agus Sóisialta, agus cur chun cinn na Gaeilge”. Dúirt Liam Connelly, Príomhfheidhmeannach Chomhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe; “Tugann na Gradaim seo deis do Chomhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe agus do PPN Chontae na Gaillimhe aitheantas a thabhairt do luach uathúil agus do chion tairbhe na n-oibrithe deonacha inár gContae, agus aitheantas a thabhairt don tionchar atá acu ar fholláine an phobail agus ar cháilíocht na beatha, agus ar an mórtas áite a spreagann a ngníomhaíochtaí”.
Fógróidh an Cathaoirleach buaiteoirí gach Catagóire ag Ball Carthanachta an Mhéara ar 27ú Bealtaine. Gheobhaidh gach Buaiteoir Gradam agus Teastas lámhcheirde coimisiúnaithe go speisialta mar aon le duais airgid de €500 i dtreo a gcuid oibre.
