A special Mariners’ Memorial Service will be hosted by Galway Bay Sailing Club on Monday (May 8 ) at Renville, Oranmore, starting at 7pm sharp.
In this nautical ceremony, which include Claddagh Hookers, prayers and poetry readings on shore will be conducted by Oranmore PP Fr Diarmuid Hogan, and Rev Anthony Previte.
The RNLI will lead the flotilla of yachts and fishing boats in from Renville point, which will also include Oranmore Search and Rescue, and Galway Sub Aqua Club, while junior sailors will also participate.
GBSC member Pierce Purcell is organising this get together to remember former members, supporters and lost fishermen, as well as the rescue services.
“It was difficult during Covid to acknowledge members and supporters’ contributions when the club moved to Renville 50 years ago,” he says.
“This is a real community event, and we welcome everyone to come along and experience how sailing has grown in recent years, and the participation and interaction on the bay.”
Purcell anticipates a big turnout at Renville, and urges those attending to arrive at the club by 6.30pm. With a high tide, the boats will be visible from a special seated area overlooking the proceedings.
The Coastguard has requested that no drones be flown in the area for safety reasons between 7pm and 8pm.
