MBRYONICS Ltd, a Galway-based company which specialises in developing advanced optics for the space industry, has just secured €4.1 million in funding through the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF ). The company is planning a significant expansion and aims to create a ‘Silicon Valley’ for earth-orbit communications technology in the west.

The company develops advanced optical systems for telecommunications, Earth observation, and science missions, and this latest investment will support it in providing end-to-end system-level solutions and engineering services for the next generation of space-based technologies and applications.

As a privately-owned SME based in Galway, Ireland, MBRYONICS focuses on creating cutting-edge optical instruments, photonic intra-sat, quantum networks, and high-frequency communications, and end-to-end free space optical communication systems for ground and space segments.

The company has been working closely with a number of space agencies to build the next generation of internet technologies in space. The DTIF investment will allow it to strengthen its services to meet customer demands for lower-cost missions, satellite miniaturisation, and series production for satellite constellations.

“We are thrilled to receive this investment from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund,” said John Mackey, CEO of MBRYONICS. “The funding will enable us to expand our expertise in key technology domains, such as freeform optics, adaptive optics, and co-packaged optics. As we continue to develop state-of-the-art solutions for integrated space and terrestrial networks, secure communications, space exploration, and Earth observation, this investment will play a critical role in maintaining our competitive edge and accelerating our growth to establish a photonics centre of excellence here on the banks of the Corrib. Our team is growing exponentially to meet the demand for this technology and we invite applications from Europe’s best and brightest engineers to become part of the mission crew.”

The company is currently in the process of moving to a new headquarters in Dangan, while also working to establish an even larger facility on the west side of the city to accommodate its rapid expansion.
