The retired members of the former Department of Posts & Telegraphs, An Post, Telecom Eireann, Eircom and Eir at Eglinton Street are holding the An Post/Eircom reunion in the Menlo Park Hotel on Friday May 19.
The function will be the third such get-together and is usually held every five years — due to the Covid restrictions, this is the first one held for some time.
The organising committee chaired by Nicholas Lyons and comprising secretary Michael Irwin, treasurer Ray Kelly, Susan and Walter McDonagh, Nora Faherty, Imelda Tierney, Pat McDonagh, Donal Lyons and George Guest have been busy preparing for the event.
They have been sourcing colleagues who have recently retired and are compiling lists of people to invite. Over the coming weeks, the committee will be contacting former members who worked in An Post and Eircom inviting them to the reunion.
The previous events were well attended and it is expected that the event on May 19 will also be a huge success.
At one time, more than 500 people worked in the Post Office in Eglinton Street, prior to the establishment of the two semi-state companies in 1984.
There is still a great bond of friendship between the former workers and although the numbers employed have dwindled, the retirees look back on their time in the PO in Eglinton Street with great affection.
The building had a very busy telephone exchange which was the main hub for telephonic communications in and out of Galway at the time.
The organising committee are also seeking sponsorship and spot prizes for the event. Anyone wishing to help in this regard can contact any of the committee members of Nicholas Lyons on 086 3201550.
