Cllr Alan Cheevers has called for more Government funding for outreach programmes and youth services across Galway city to help discourage young people from forming gangs.
“I think it’s vital that more funding is allocated to communities right across the city,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said. “I have heard many times that young people have nowere to go. Although sport is a great outlet for many youths, not all are interested sport. I believe we need to see more community buildings constructed, also if we provide funding for services we also need to see youth engagement by communities, and ask them what they would like to see in their communities.
“I would like to propose that all secondary schools in the city open engagement with their students and let them make suggestions on how we can improve their communities. I think this would be a project that would beneficial to all stakeholders.”
