Let’s Get Galway Growing

Community gardens throughout Galway city have been busy over the last few months clearing, planning and starting the planting out of seedlings and seeds for what it is hoped will be another bumper year of produce.

Let’s Get Galway Growing Galway (LGGG ) supports gardens in the city through a network where member gardens come together and share information, host garden events and gather for joint training on garden related topics. More information is available on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/LetsGetGalwayGrowing

The only requirement for membership is a curiosity in growing and an openness to taking part whatever your capacity. The gardens are spaces where neighbours, families, people who have experienced homelessness, older people, disabled people, new communities and young people can come together. The gardens are organised and run by local people for local people using organic principles to stay connected with nature and the natural environment.

This time of year the gardens are looking for new volunteers to get involved. Go along to your local garden and meet people for a chat. No commitment is needed. All gardeners love to give a tour of their spaces as community participation is what the organisation is about.

LGGG is supported and funded through Galway City Partnership and the Health Service Executive Community Health Care West. There are currently nine community gardens, dotted throughout the city, which are members of the network.

If you are involved in a community garden that would like to become a member of the network, or if you want to become involved in a community garden in your area, contact Fiona Blaney, Galway City Partnership, at [email protected]/086 7709919.
