A collection of more than 40 original paintings by artists Vicki and Dominique Crowley, has opened at The Kenny Gallery in Liosbán, Galway. The exhibition will run until April 29 in the art gallery and online.
The show, entitled Counterpoint, sees mother and daughter exhibit together for the first time, and is an exhibition which explores the artists’ relationships with nature and how we live in a time of climate change and biodiversity loss. It celebrates nature’s wonder but also highlights how humanity has impacted it and left its mark for the future. Our place in the world is a prevailing interest to both artists.
Born in Malta, Vicki Crowley’s extensive travels have informed her broad practice which extends across various media. From oils, to paintings on silk, to an impressive legacy of stained glass church windows, her work often draws from ancient stories, retold in contemporary ways. She shares her love of painting with Dominique who recently trained in fine art after a career in Public Health Medicine. Dominique has won a number of graduate and emerging artist awards including a recently completed residency in the RHA.
In this show, first hand observations of melting ice in Antarctica contrast with road markings speeding into the distance which, in turn, sit beside man-made markings in bogs. Digital displays remind us of how our experience of the world is digitally mediated through screens. The works of both artists salutes the wealth of nature that still exists and which, at all cost, must not be forfeited.
