Long running Galway based Irish language TV drama series, Ros na Rún will broadcast its 2000th episode on the eve of St Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 16 at 8:30 on TG4.
Ros na Rún is the nation’s only rural based TV series and is filmed in a purpose built fictional village in An Spidéal. First broadcast on November 3, 1996, Ros na Rún has never shied away from topical issues, regardless of how controversial they were deemed at the time, mirroring social issues the residents of rural Ireland deal with, including, alcoholism, drugs, domestic and coercive control and rape. The series even shone the spotlight on same sex relationships, including the first gay kiss in 1997.
The show has welcomed high profile personalities include Stephen Fry, Nathan Carter, Francis Brennan, Alan Hughes and the Hot House Flowers star Fiachna O Braonáin has featured in storylines. Most recently Páraic Breathnach has joined the cast as the controversial developer Sonny Dirrane.
Ros na Rún is sponsored by XL Ireland whose shop features strongly on the TV drama series and is the largest independent artistic production outside of Dublin. A co-production between Connemara’s Danú Media and Dublin’s Tyrone Productions, it now employs 160 people during its filming season from August to February annually when 82 episodes of the thrilling drama series are created.
