Wexford pull away in second half

The Galway Intermediate team suffered another defeat in the Very Camogie League Division 2B over the weekend, losing to Wexford 1-13 to 1-9.

With nine changes to the starting 15 from the opening game against Kilkenny, Galway produced a better performance than the previous game when they had failed to score in the second half.

The sides were level on numerous occasions in the opening half before Wexford took a 0-7 Galway 0-5 as they headed into the break.

Doyle, through a free and Grace Roche, from play extended Wexford’s lead in the opening few minutes of the second half. However, a poor clearance in the 41st minute from the Wexford defence found Galway substitute Chole Broderick, who from 45m struck the ball over the bar.

Doyle, through a placed ball and Ava Lynskey, from play, exchanged scores as Wexford kept their noses in front, 0-9 to 0-6, in favour of Wexford heading to the midway point of the half.

Caoimhe Byrne and Sal Doyle from play added points Wexford tally, while Chloe Reilly, from a very tight angle from play, and Spellman from a free, both added to Galway's scoresheet, with three between the sides and eight minutes left on the clock.

Crucially a long ball by Lettie Whelan was fumbled in the Galway goal, and Ciara Butler capitalised to stick the ball into the back of the Galway net and extend Wexford’s lead to six.

Galway did not give up, and joint captain Ava Lynskey took on the Wexford defence, found sister Caoimhe, when then lobbed a high ball into the square. A miscommunication between corner back Kelly Anne Dempsey and Emma Keily in the Wexford goal resulted in a goal, giving Galway a life-line. And Lynskey did her best with another goal opportunity in the 58th minute, but on this occasion her shot was well blocked down by Kiely in the Wexford net.

Howevver, Doyle struck the insurance score for Wexford on the 56th minute through a 45m free to ensure Wexford ran out four-point winners on the day. Galway did create another goal opportunity on the 58th minute but Lynskey’s shot was well blocked down by Keily in the Wexford net.

Galway will now play an in-form Cork in two weeks' time in Cork.
