Review of Tuam ambulance service under way

The HSE’s national ambulance service in the west is currently reviewing Tuam’s ambulance base to see if it needs to be expanded.

A recent meeting of the HSE West’s regional health forum at Merlin Park Hospital was told that the review will examine the issue of capacity versus demand.

JJ McGowan, the chief ambulance officer west, was replying to a question from Fianna Fail councillor and forum member, Donagh Killilea. He asked the HSE to confirm if an additional ambulance and staff is going to be located at the Tuam ambulance base. He also wanted to know how many ambulance units operate out of Tuam.

Mr McGowan stated that Tuam currently has a day and night ambulance crew which operate a service from Monday to Sunday. The review will examine the need for additional crews to enhance this level of service.
