Help with primary school maths

A child’s encounters with maths in the early years in primary school will influence how confident they feel about maths and how they will perform in the higher primary classes, into secondary school and beyond. Maths skills are life skills. Maths teaches us to think independently and to solve problems.

The foundation blocks of mathematical understanding are laid in the preschool years and continue to be strengthened as the child enters the first years in primary school. The development of a sound number sense and a high level of fluency in the basic number bonds of addition and subtraction are essential before the child can be introduced to the concept of multiplication and division and the skill of mastering tables. These skills are essential before the child progresses further to take on board the concept of fractions, decimals and percentages, time, measure and geometry, and associated required skills, not to mention problem solving techniques.

FCL Galway assesses each child’s ability in all these areas and then develops an individual programme which will ensure the child fully understands each of these concepts. The teacher will help the student to develop these skills, so they feel confident with each concept before the next concept is introduced. This helps the child to take ownership of their learning and feel at ease with maths. It gives them confidence and helps them see the relevance of maths. Important life skills, such as analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and abstract thinking are developed through maths education, which starts right now in the primary years.
