Children’s progress is unlimited when they study at their ‘just right’ level. When children are able to do their work on their own, whatever that level may be, they can move forwards at a much smoother pace than if they are not able to do the work by themselves. By giving students the ‘just right’ work for them, they can exceed adults' expectations. Kumon wants children to experience the joy of learning new things and to realise that there is no limit to how far they can advance.

To self-learn means to have the opportunity to learn new things without someone explaining it, or “teaching” it in the traditional sense. There is a wonderful sense of achievement in feeling, “I did that,” “I figured it out.” Based on this philosophy, the aim of Kumon can be broadly stated as children progressing beyond their school level through self-learning.
