Galway based contemporary singer-songwriter Micheál O’Connor, originally from Mayo, released his new single earlier this month on Wednesday February 8. ‘Home in Mayo’ evokes the spirit of Micheál's home county.
Micheál’s new release displays a heartfelt side, as he describes how family members had to seek work abroad due to difficult times. Unfortunately, not all emigrants had the option to return home.
The lyrics transport you back into a very different world, bringing up feelings of nostalgia and serenity. It's hard not to picture a past era through the song’s vivid imagery, which depicts scenes of the moon illuminating the hallway, the smell of candle grease, and the unlocked front door.
“On those bright clear starry nights, when the sparkling waters were in flow, still stands silently among the trees...that home in Mayo.”
After winning the John Arden award from University of Galway in 2015 for a poem called ‘Sanctimonious-ness’, Micheál rewrote it as a song, which is now part of his rich and varied repertoire.
His new release 'Home In Mayo' captures the memories and beauty of a rural Irish home in days gone by.
As well as his musical career, Micheál has acted in many theatre productions over the years. He studied Philosophy, English, and Drama at the University of Galway.
