United should overcome tricky FAI Cup test to progress

A demanding task awaits Galway United in the FAI Ford Cup third round when they travel to Ballybofey to face Finn Harps on Saturday (7.45pm ).

A couple of years ago at this stage Galway United were rocked by the concession of two late goals when Harps came to the west, so manager Ian Foster will be hoping his team can be safe and solid in Finn Park.

That is exactly what Galway were last week for 45 minutes against Drogheda United, but a tepid third quarter was punished by Alan Matthews’ improving team as they carved out a 1 - 1 draw.

Foster provided an accurate assessment on that fixture.

“I thought we started the game very well, that's what I asked, play on the front foot, get in people's faces, press high up the pitch. We did that, got a goal, continued to do it, got a penalty, should have scored, didn't, we couldn't put the game to bed.

“ We came out at half time and were sloppy, didn't press. We got what we deserved and although we reacted well after the goal, on the balance of play it was probably a fair result.”

While Harps’ cause is scarcely aided by the absence of ex-Galway frontrunner Conor Gethins, they have enjoyed some productive outings recently, although they lie 10th in the first division table. However there is an adequate amount of talent in the Galway squad to clear this hurdle and book a berth in the last 16 of the competition.

Galway United Supporters’ Trust will be running a bus to Saturday’s FAI Cup match, departing from Fibber Magees, Eyre Square, at 2.30pm. To book a seat contact Ronan Coleman 087-6972823.

Down in Tralee on Saturday (6.30pm ), under the astute direction of Emlyn Long and Mike Quirke, Salthill’s youngsters could cause a mild surprise by dumping Dynamoes out.

Flying high in the A Championship, Salthill clash with a Dynamoes outfit that will be similarly hopeful of advancing.

In the EA Sports League Cup James Whelan, Ryan O’Donnell, Robbie Porter, and Mikey Gilmore contributed handsomely enough to ensure Salthill will travel quietly optimistic.

•Galway United Management Committee will be holding an open meeting tonight (Thursday ) upstairs in Fibber Magees, Eyre Square, at 7pm. The purpose of the meeting will be to get as many people as possible involved in the day-to-day running of the club, and to co-ordinate activities for the summer period.
