Suicide is a topic that is unfortunately all too common and prevalent in Irish society.
There are not many of us in Ireland who have not been affected by suicide, be it association through a family member, friend, or colleague who has attempted to take their own lives, or unfortunately has taken their own lives.
Figures for death by suicide are still alarming and exceptionally high. The unfortunate issue we have is that we are all aware of suicide, but the question is how we prevent it happening in the first place. We cannot say with any great degree of certainty that all suicide is preventable, but the ability to empathise and communicate with a person you deem at risk is something that can have a very strong impact and could ultimately contribute towards saving someone’s life.
The Lions Club, in partnership with the HSE, is running a suicide alertness training course under the heading ‘Safe Talk’ on Wednesday evening February 1 at 5.30pm in SCCUL Enterprise Centre, Ballybane.
Advance registration is a requirement to participate on this course. Numbers are limited and early booking is advised.
It is strongly recommended that if you cannot attend on that evening, please provide advance notification as non-attendance will prevent other likely participants from attending this vitally important course.
It is envisaged that further course dates will be announced throughout 2023.
Further details are available on the Lions Club website. For more information go to lionsclubs.ie/service/suicide-prevention or see the Lions Club Facebook page - Lions Club Suicide prevention training.
