What’s it like to be a lifeguard in Ireland?

Are you thinking about becoming a lifeguard and doing a lifeguard course with Atlantic Coast Lifeguards? Which course is right for you?

First, decide on inside or outside. Depending on where exactly you will be a lifeguard, the training is different. There are three lifeguard qualifications, beach, pool, and open water. This is because each location varies in required swimming ability and also has very different job specs. You don’t have to do one to gain the other – each are individual courses.

A quick insight on differences: If you are on a beach then you will need to learn about tide, swell, and weather, as well as being very swim fit and be able paddle out through surf on a board. If it’s in a pool then you will learn about customer care, spinal recovery techniques, and there is swimming but a lot less than a beach as you are in an enclosed environment. Open water is for lakes, but primarily aimed at aqua parks, this means it is all about group management and engagement. All courses have a huge element on life support and first aid.

These courses will prepare you for any and all water rescues/scenarios and leave you with not only your lifeguard certificate but also certificates in CPR, AED, and first aid. But more importantly, the course will give you the confidence and knowledge to know what you can do in an emergency.
