A cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with an articulated lorry on the Old Dublin Road in Renmore this week. Gardai are appealing to people who witnessed the incident to come forward.
The accident happened at the Skerritt Roundabout on Tuesday, January 17, shortly before 6pm. Emergency services were called and the cyclist, a man in his thirties, was taken by ambulance to UHG. He was understood to be in a serious condition following the crash.
Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a technical examination of the scene, and an investigation of the incident is under way.
Galway Cycling Campaign has called for the redesign of a number of roundabouts in the city in the wake of the crash, stating that these roundabouts put vulnerable road users at risk by placing them in the same space as vehicles.
“Bikes and trucks do not mix," said Kevin Jennings, chairperson of Galway Cycling Campaign. "We don’t know the details of the collision, yet we do know that dangerous road designs across Galway city put vulnerable road users in direct conflict with vehicle drivers. Multi-lane roundabouts where people on bikes share space with articulated trucks cannot be tolerated in our city,”
The group sent its best wishes to the cyclist, and the driver of the lorry, following the collision.
“This is a living nightmare," said Cécile Robin of Galway Cycling Campaign. "Our city has multiple danger spots where it is very difficult to cross the road. The roundabouts at Bohermore, Galway University Hospital, and Fort Lorenzo are particularly hostile. People who cross these roads on foot or bike are put in danger for the sake of prioritizing motor-traffic flow. We urge the community of Renmore to engage with the BusConnects Dublin Road plan. The public consultation is open right now.”
Meanwhile, Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this crash to come forward. They are also appealing to those with camera footage, including motorists with dashcam footage, from the vicinity of Skerritt Roundabout at the time of the collision, to make it available to them.
