Walsh becomes new FG leader in city

Councillor Brian Walsh has been elected as the new Fine Gael leader on the Galway City Council replacing long serving former councillor John Mulholland.

Cllr Walsh said his focus now was to help deliver two seats for Fine Gael in the next General Election and the party organisation in the city will “have a big role to play in this”.

In last weekend’s Local Elections, FG won three seats in Galway city and increased the party’s share of the vote. However the party was disappointed that Cllr Mulholland lost his seat and that FG did not make any gains, especially at a time of Government unpopularity.

“John’s losing out so narrowly is a particular source of disappointment,” said Cllr Walsh. “He has given 24 years of uninterrupted service to the city and his contribution will be greatly missed. He served two terms as mayor and always put the city first. He was very much a calming influence when things got hot in the chamber. On behalf of Fine Gael I would like to publicly thank John for his distinguished service to the party.”
