Latest tax trawl nets €1.2 million in Galway

Four Galway people made tax settlements totalling more than €1.2 million in the first quarter of this year, according to the latest list of tax defaulters released this week by the Revenue Commissioners.

The largest Galway settlement came from Joseph Ridge, a farmer and retired undertaker from Connemara, who paid just over €500,000 in taxes, interest, and penalties arising from an underdeclaration of income tax and an investigation into offshore assets.

Mr Ridge’s settlement, totalling €503,000, included €268,746 in interest and penalties.

The second highest settlement came from Michael Curley, a company director from Ballinasloe, who paid €450,00 in tax, interest, and penalties.

The four Galway people made settlements totalling €1,212,209.30 during the first quarter of the year.

The quarterly settlements bulletin lists those audit settlements where the Revenue Commissioners accepted a settlement of more than €12,700 (or €30,000 for some investigations ), including tax, interests, and penalties, instead of instituting proceedings for the recovery of the penalties. People who made voluntary disclosures prior to the beginning of an audit, or who paid fines and penalties amounting to less than 15 per cent of the tax due, are not included in the list.
