Fianna Fáil councillor Alan Cheevers has criticised the department of local Government for not allocating funding to grit pathways and roads in council housing estates across the city.
He believes it is a serious health and safety issue currently that there is only funding to grit main roads.
“It is not acceptable that funding is not being allocated to local authorities to carry out safety measures in council estates during these treacherous weather conditions.
“We have elderly people and people with disabilities effectively prisoners in their own homes because they are afraid to leave house to go to shops or appointments because they are afraid of slippery pathways and roads.
“I spoke to a businessman in the city yesterday who told me he slipped on the pathway on Saturday and broke his ankle in three places.
“I am writing to Minister O’Brien and asking for emergency funding to be allocated to carry out this work and make estates safer over the winter period,” he said.
