Some 8,000 shoeboxes were dispatched from Galway Racecourse on Wednesday, November 30 and are currently en route to bring a truly magical Christmas to children in South Africa.
Manned entirely by volunteers, hundreds of crates containing the carefully collated shoeboxes, which were donated by schools and families across the county, were loaded onto an articulated truck headed for a three week journey to South Africa.
Coordinator of the Galway Christmas Shoebox Appeal, Bernadette Glynn said that these gifts would bring joy to children who treat items we take for granted, as if they were treasures.
“There will be children waiting for these boxes who may not have anything and they cherish everyday items we take for granted like ribbons or ziploc bags. Ziploc bags are like magic to some of these kids and they cherish and use them in different ways, bringing their pencils around or hair bands and ribbons. It’s so rewarding to see how much joy they get out of stuff we take for granted.”
