A public commemoration is to take place at the Liam Mellow’s Statue in Eyre Square this coming Sunday, December 11 to mark the centenary of the execution of Liam Mellows.
Liam Mellows was a central figure in the movement towards Irish Independence in the early 20th century. Were it not for Mellows, the Easter Rising would not have occurred anywhere outside of Dublin. He organised the rebels in Galway and inspired many to join the revolutionary forces.
He opposed the terms of the treaty agreed with Great Britain in 1921 and took up a leadership role in the anti-treaty forces during the civil war. He was executed for this stance on December 8th 1922.
This Sunday, December 11, there will be a special commemorative ceremony in Galway to mark the occasion of his 100th anniversary.
An Anniversary Mass be celebrated in St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Road at 11:30am. Following the Mass there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Liam Mellows Statue in Eyre Square commencing at 12:45pm. Mr William Henry, historian and author will address the ceremony at the statue as will Deputy Eamon Ó Cuiv.
