“No need to hop on a plane to get away this January. At the heart of Galway's winter, the Midwinter Festival offers you the opportunity to experience the feeling of four seasons all packed into one wonderful weekend.“ – Anna Lardi, executive director of Music for Galway.
Music for Galway will launch the 20th Midwinter Festival SEASONS at the Town Hall Theatre and The Hardiman from January 20-22, 2023.
The Midwinter Festival takes inspiration from its own name and explores not only winter, but all four glorious seasons.
Vivaldi’s hugely popular classic Four Seasons will be tackled by the vibrant Irish Chamber Orchestra and soloist/director Katherine Hunka. The Irish Chamber Orchestra is Ireland’s most dynamic ensemble. Mixing traditional repertoire with new commissions and collaborating with everyone from DJs to dance companies, the ICO pushes the boundaries of what a chamber orchestra can do.
The festival will open in The Town Hall on Friday January 20 to the more intimate venue of The Hardiman on Saturday January 21 and Sunday January 22. In addition to offering of a wonderful atmosphere and cuisine at the heart of Galway, the hotel will also set the scene for three more Midwinter Festival concerts.
At 6pm, Freddy Kempf will juxtapose Tchaikovsky’s Seasons with Chopin’s Grande Polonaise Brillante while our two song recitals will take us on two very different journeys. Kempf is one of today’s most successful pianists performing to sell-out audiences all over the world. On Saturday at 9pm, Schubert’s deeply moving and intensely beautiful Winterreise, sung by German baritone Jochen Kupfer with pianist Finghin Collins, will be followed by a journey of redemption, promise and joy on Sunday at 3pm with songs from spring, autumn and summer brought to life by Galway favourite - the radiant Dutch soprano Lenneke Ruiten. The festival will wrap up with a complimentary wine and canapé reception for all closing concert ticket holders.
If you are looking for an uplifting gift this Christmas, festival tickets are available as well as combination deals and a festival package including a stay at the Hardiman.
