Priority to be given to new cycleway from Oranmore town to train station

Galway County Council and the National Transport Authority (NTA ) are to prioritise the development of a new cycleway from Oranmore Town to Oranmore Train Station, on the Coast Road.

Local TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD, announced the development speaking after discussions she had undertaken with both organisations.

“As an Oranmore native, I am more than aware of the necessity to provide a safe cycle route from Oranmore Town to the local Train Station. I had previously allocated funding for the now completed flood alleviation works on the road as well as new lighting. While this is very positive for both residents and commuters, there is a glaring necessity to allow people to cycle safely from Oranmore to the Train Station,” the local Minister said.

“Having discussed the matter with both the NTA and Galway County Council, I can now confirm that a new cycling route will be given priority, with a designer to be appointed in January next year. I have also assured Galway County Council that there is no shortage of funding within my department for the project,” she added.

“Oranmore Train Station is a fantastic facility and earlier this year I attended the contract signing for the upgrade of the station which will provide a new platform and passing loop. This in turn will allow for greater frequency of trains. I allocated €3 million from my own Department for this project and ensured that the remaining €9 million was delivered under the Urban Development and Regeneration Fund.

“In order to provide for greater use of public transport, the infrastructure must be in place to allow this to happen safely and this new linkage will assist those wishing to leave the car at home whether commuting for work or just visiting the city,” she concluded.
