Galwegians suffered yet another narrow home defeat, 14-12, after running table-toppers Greystones extremely close in their Energia League Division 2B encounter at Crowley Park on Saturday.
Few gave the Blues any chance as they took on the runaway leaders, but they gave the Wicklowmen an almighty fright, and a win would not have flattered the Blues who, despite their losing run, are improving game by game.
Wegians took the lead with the game’s opening try midway through the first-half when prop Jack Winters scored from a strong forward drive, and Darragh Kennedy converted.
They remained 7-0 until just before half-time when the visitors scored a crucial try through Killian Marmion, who also converted.
The visitors made the wind advantage count, and with some territory and possession, the pressure told and referee Kevin Coffey awarded a penalty try.
However a young Wegians team showed great character and determination, and with the game entering the closing stages, they were rewarded when a good backline move was finished by winger Shane Mallon crossing out wide. Wind conditions made the conversion attempt impossible for Kennedy as Stones clung on for a narrow victory.
Brendan Guilfoyle’s young charges now face Wanderers in Dublin on Saturday.
