ALDI disappointed at Monivea Road planning refusal

ALDI Ireland has expressed its regret at the decision by An Bord Pleanála to refuse planning permission for its proposed new store on Monivea Road, Ballybrit.

It said that it is "extremely disappointed' and outlined the impact on shopping choice and job creation.

“Being able to offer our customers the best value at locations most convenient to them matters more than ever. ALDI delivers unbeatable value in the towns and communities in which we operate and creates employment to support the local economy.

"This regrettable decision means that the people of Galway will continue to pay more for their weekly shopping and will miss out on the jobs this project would have created – both in the construction phase and permanently in store roles thereafter.

“The decision of An Bord Pleanála, is particularly disappointing given the project was supported by local authority councillors who recognised the value that a new ALDI store could bring to their community.”

“Regrettably, we have already been experiencing long delays in An Bord Pleanála’s approvals process, with a decision on this application originally due 37 weeks ago. These delays mean more communities are losing out on the benefits that ALDI brings to local economies when they are needed more than ever.”

ALDI added that the cost-of-living crisis is impacting every household and that they are very aware what it means for its customers.

"New survey data last month from ALDI and children’s charity Barnardos revealed that more than one in four parents with children living at home felt that they have not had enough food to feed their families over the past 12 months.”

“ALDI’s commitment to further embedding and expanding our value offering has never been more relevant and remains our key business priority. Earlier this year, we announced a further €63 million investment in new stores in the West of Ireland, creating jobs and doubling-down on our commitment to providing access to the best value groceries in Ireland right across the region.

While we remain committed in full to these expansion plans, we will have to review the implications of today’s decision in terms of what it means for Monivea Road," it said.
