2022 marks the centenary of the disbandment of the Connaught Rangers. To mark this very special anniversary, the Connaught Rangers Association have commissioned a memorial headstone, dedicated to the memory of the men who served in the Connaught Rangers from 1793 to 1922.

As most soldiers were buried where they fell in The Great War and other campaigns, there was no place for families to mourn their loved ones. This memorial will connect the past, present and future, store memories, not glorify war, but honour those that died. It will be a place of remembrance and reflection for the 2,500 Rangers who died in the Great War, many of whom were from Galway and the West of Ireland.

The memorial will be unveiled on Remembrance Sunday, 13 November, at 3pm in the New Cemetery Bohermore, Galway, by Senator Gerard Craughwell. After the ceremony, officiated by the Most Reverend Paul Murphy (Military Chaplain ) and Most Reverend Lynda Peilow (Rector of St. Nicholas’s Church ), there will be light refreshments served in the Menlo Park Hotel, H91E98N, followed by a short lecture on the Connaught Rangers disbandment by Dr Tony King.

Finally, on behalf of the Connaught Rangers Association Committee, chairman PJ Maloney said he would like to thank all involved for their support in bringing this project to fruition.
