Mauritius lies in the inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. A country rich in history, having first being colonised back in 1638, it has a fascinating blend of cultures, traditions, customs, and cuisine. English is the official language, but you will hear some French and Creole when you are out and about.
Mauritius lies off the southeast coast of Africa. It is rightly famed for its sapphire-blue waters, powder-white beaches and, yes, luxury resorts that provide a front-row seat onto some of the most beautiful views of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by coral reefs and clustered with spectacular bays, hidden coves, and glorious powder sand beaches, Mauritius is a totally unspoilt holiday destination. It represents definitive luxury, perfect for those seeking rest and relaxation.
Mauritius’ weather is warm all year round. Between November and May you can expect daily temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s. The rest of the year the mercury hovers around 24 °C. There is a wet season in Mauritius, but it is nowhere near as pronounced as in other countries. The months of January to March experience a bit of rain, but showers tend to be short, sharp, and heavier inland than on the coast.
You will want to spend lots of time on – or in – the water during your Mauritius holidays. Plunge into the teal ocean to snorkel or scuba dive among brilliant coral reefs and marine wildlife, or book an island cruise to glide by the sheltered lagoons of the east coast. Other water sports include stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, flyboarding, and kayaking.
On land, you can hike to the prominent basalt peak of Le Morne Brabant, or lounge on one of Mauritius’ many white sand beaches. To see more of the scenic island, hire a car and drink in idyllic views of tea fields and waterfalls. Like the Irish, Mauritians also drive on the left, and the island is very navigable. Trek alongside the Galets River, search for curious indigenous pink pigeons, or soar over verdant landscapes on a zipline.
The capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, offers a dash of culture. Follow the locals to the popular Central Market. For Mauritian glass souvenirs and other artwork, visit the Craft Market. If you seek shade, take refuge in the shade of banyan trees at Jardins de la Compagnie.
