Castlegar were crowned the 2022 Duanes Hardware intermediate camogie champions after a tight contest with Salthill Knocknacarra on Sunday in St Brendan’s Park, Loughrea.
It was 10 years since Castlegar last won the title, and on that occasion they made it all the way to the All-Ireland Club final where they overcame the Rower Inistiogefrom Kilkenny.
Castlegar prevailed by a single point, 0-9 to Salhtill's 0-8, in a game with little between the sides.
Laura Kelly was the key scorer for Salthill Knocknacarra, but Castlebar's Chloe Broderick kept pace throughout the contest as the sides were deadlocked throughtout the contest.
And although Kelly struck Salthill Knocknacarra’s final score, Broderick responded with two frees that was enough to seal victory her side.
Salthill Knocknacarra will be disappointed to lose out by a point for the second year in a row. They had a chance to level at the end with a free, but they opted to drop it in short and the Castlegar defence stood strong and ensured the ball was cleared off the line.
Castlegar now progress onto the AIB All Ireland Club Championship semi-final. They will also take part in the Fr Lawless Connacht Intermediate Final where they will take on St Dominic’s from Roscommon in the final.
