Galway WFC fell to a second successive defeat last Saturday, losing 3-2 to DLR Waves in Eamon Deacy Park on Saturday.
Galway had started brightly, taking the lead within seven minutes when Julie Ann Russell brilliantly burst past two defenders on the right, got to the byline and picked out Elle O’Flaherty who slotted home well to give Alan Murphy’s side a dream start.
However, the lead lasted only four minutes. From a routine throw-in on the left, Shauna Caroll danced by three would-be Galway defenders and beat Galway goalie Abbiegayle Ronayne at her near post.
Amazingly, only two minutes later, Galway WFC were behind. The visitors took possession from a long kick out and a strong strike from Carla MacManus on the right was well parried on to the post by Ronayne. DLR Waves striker Katie Malone proved most alert to the rebound and tapped home from two yards.
Galway fought back and took the game to DLR Waves - influential Russell forcing a sharp save from opposition keeper and skipper Eve Badana. However, ? the home team’s pressure was finally rewarded. A fantastic in-swinging corner from Kate Thompson swung to the back post and Jamie Erickson showed courage, skill and power to head home from six yards to make it 2-2 after 52 minutes.?
Unfortunately, with the game in the balance, it was the away team that emerged victorious. A long ball from keeper Badana sailed over the Galway defence and Avril Brierley showed exquisite composure to gather and dink the ball home.?
Another gap week means Galway WFC will have to wait until Saturday week to attempt to rediscover their earlier season form. They travel to Dublin to take on Bohemians, when it is hoped the future of senior football in the city will be more certain.
