Galway City West and Knocknacarra Councillor Donal Lyons has this week raised serious safety concerns with Galway City Council regarding the construction of an entrance to a new estate being developed on the Upper Ballymoneen Road.
He said that in recent days an entrance to the Maolchnoc estate is under construction, and he noticed that the actual entrance has not been stepped back as is the norm when other estates or individual houses are being developed.
“The kerbs at the entrance to the estate meet the existing roadway and as a result two vehicles meeting on the road at this point have to give way. I understood that any new housing development would have to be stepped back to allow for road widening,” he said.
Cllr Lyons said that when he raised concerns with the Roads Department of Galway City Council, they confirmed that planning permission for this estate had been granted for the entrance that is now being constructed.
“It appears that the carriageway is to be widened on the opposite side of the road pending the construction of the Galway City Outer Ring Road.
“I find it incredible that this was allowed to happen as the widening of the roadway opposite this development depends on the construction of a further development which has not yet received planning permission or for the development of the outer ring road which may take years pending the outcome of the Judicial Review now underway,” he concluded.
