Balloons, banners, and blue lighting in the Menlo Park Hotel set the scene for the Kumon Galway City West Awards Ceremony 2022. The Mayor of Galway City Clodagh Higgins welcomed the Kumon families gathered together and spoke of the hope for the future engendered by students who commit to daily study in maths, English, or both, in order to develop their full potential.
Students received certificates marking their achievements in their subject(s ) of study. Special merit awards were presented for exceptional perseverance. Students studying six months or more above their age were awarded bronze medals, those studying two years or more ahead of their age received silver medals. Three students received gold medals for studying three years or more ahead in mathematics. A special plaque was presented to Hana Rosie Nasri who is studying mathematics five years ahead of her age.
The highest academic award of the event was presented to Yumna Yousif, a gold medal completer of the English programme. Yumna, aged 10, was also the winner of the Stephen Hayden Trophy for outstanding personal excellence. Presenting the trophy, Irene Murphy, regional director of Youth Work Ireland Galway, cited the courage and perseverance required for such a young student to approach work up to seven years ahead of her age.
