With schools reopening this week after the summer holidays, An Garda Síochána is asking road-users to be aware of schoolchildren using the roads, particularly near schools and in residential areas.
“Remember that children often don’t recognise risk or danger in the same way adults do, so make sure you pay extra attention when children are nearby,” local gardai told the Advertiser.
“We are also urging parents and guardians to talk to their children about road safety and the journey to and from school.
“If you are transporting children to school please ensure that each child is properly restrained and follow the schools advice for drop offs and pickups.
“If children are walking or cycling to school please ensure they are wearing high visibility reflective clothing.
“In the case of cycling always wear a helmet check that the brakes, lights, reflector and bell are in good working order.
“Further road safety advice for parents and motorists is included is available on www.rsa.ie,” he said.
