GMIT offers new master’s of business in strategy and innovation management

A new Masters of Business in Strategy and Innovation Management will be offered at the School of Business in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT ) from September 2009.

The one-year full-time programme will have taught modules in business strategy, international business, innovation management and project management, and will equip future graduates with the technical and theoretical skills required for employment or enterprise start-up in the knowledge economy.

Additionally, all students on the programme will have to undertake a one-day, ten-week placement in small indigenous enterprises located in the GMIT Business in Innovation Centre (IiBC ) or in the Ballybane Enterprise Centre.

The programme design and structure has been influenced by recent Government-commissioned reports, most notably the Smart Economy Report published in December 2008. The programme will be delivered in the Dublin Road (Galway ) campus and has already attracted considerable interest from GMIT students and other college graduates seeking to earn a Masters qualification.

Larry Elwood, Head of the School of Business, says the programme aims to meet the current needs of both the Irish and local economy, in creating a knowledge-intensive economy. “The work placement component is both a novel and critical dimension of the new programme. Students will be placed with small indigenous, innovation-focused companies one day a week for ten weeks, which will enhance their employability. This will ensure that our graduates experience at first hand the importance of innovation and creativity in creating viable enterprises.”

Applicants for the programme are expected to hold a minimum Honours 2.2 Business or cognate degree and may also be required to attend for interview as part of the selection process.
