COPE Galway invites us to ‘age proof’ our lives

There are simple changes we can make right now, to ensure that we live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Because of COPE Galway’s work with older people towards enjoying healthy, independent, ageing at home, the charity has invited Professor Rose Anne Kenny to Galway. A leading researcher in the field, Professor Kenny will share her knowledge on how to ‘age proof’ our lives.

This September, Professor Kenny, author of Age Proof, visits Galway to explain the most up-to-date research on why we age. Beyond important steps such as preparing for retirement financially, we can also make health and wellbeing “deposits” by working on areas such as friendship, purpose, laughter, food, exercise, intimacy, and more, so that this stage of life is one to look forward to and enjoy. While, as with financial planning, the earlier we start, the better, it is never too late.

Professor Kenny will speak on Monday, September 26, at 6.45pm in the ILAS Centre at NUI Galway. Register for this free event in advance by typing ageproof.eventbrite.ie into your internet browser.

While all of us age, some of us live longer than others. The latest science shows that 80 per cent of our ageing biology is within our control: not only can we live longer lives, but we can become happier and healthier deep into our later years.

This event is hosted by COPE Galway and the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, in association with Age Friendly Galway as part of Positive Ageing Week (September 26 to 30 ). Other initiatives include:

· An exhibition showcasing older people from across Galway who contribute to the community and/or are a great example of positive ageing.

· A project for children to send caring notecards to older people. Cards can be picked up at local libraries as well as at the Atlantaquarium and Charlie Byrne’s bookshop.

For a full list of places to pick up notecards and details on other Positive Ageing Week initiatives visit www.copegalway.ie/positiveageingweek
