Cannon welcomes investment in Galway recreation facilities
Local Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon has welcomed an investment of over €367,000 in outdoor recreation facilities across Co. Galway as part of an ongoing national programme of investment by Rural Development Minister Heather Humphreys.
The Outdoor Recreation Investment Scheme is designed to support local communities and local authorities in developing and enhancing outdoor recreation projects which encourage people of all ages to become active and also attract tourists to rural towns and villages.
Adventure tourism is a major growth area internationally and Galway and the West of Ireland are being marketed as perfect locations for those interested in experiencing the outdoors. The investment in Co. Galway will support 11 different projects across the county.
“This is a most welcome investment in our rural towns and villages and forms part of Our Rural Future, our government’s plan to continue investing in the future of rural Ireland.
The focus of this funding is to develop rural Ireland’s unique natural amenities and support outdoor pursuits and adventure activities, and our county of Galway, with its beautiful and diverse landscapes, certainly lends itself to this kind of development”, said Deputy Cannon.
The 11 projects for Co. Galway are as follows;Carrabane Forest Walk - €29250 Connemara Greenway - €55350 East Galway ECO Park Kilconnell - €50,000 Glenamaddy Walking Trails - €21072 Gort Riverwalk - €27424 The Hymany Way - €28316 Luba Loch Chualainn - €26024 Luibin Cnoc Choillin - €30,000 Monivea Woods Trail - €27,000 Portumna Outdoor Recreation Park - €49,950 Mountbellew Riverside Nature Park - €23075
“These are all wise investments in our local communities, in their tourism potential, but also in the quality of life of those who live there. Each of these grants across Co Galway will improve access to our unique, natural amenities such as our lakes, rivers and beaches, as well as our forests, mountains and bogs.
“This is exactly the kind of investment we need to be making and I’m very grateful to Minister Heather Humphreys and to Galway Co Council for their support in getting these projects underway,” concluded Deputy Cannon.
Canney said Government need to be truthful
on climate emission ceilings
Sean Canney Independent TD has called on the Government to be clear on their plans in relation to the announcement on carbon emission targets.
The 25% target for farming is not possible to achieve and without a detailed costed plan.
“It is a PR stunt without any back up details. There is talk of innovation and new technologies, but these are just a figment of someone’s imagination,” he said.
“The passing of the Climate Action Bill set in train this crazy attack on farming. The Bill was supported by Fianna Fail and Fine Geal backbench TD’s so they cannot blame the Greens.
It is notable that vague promises of income support have no detail and no money in place,” Dep Canney added.
He said that young farmers will find it difficult to stay farming and food projection will be affected. In a country of growing population, secure food supply is essential.
“This knee jerk reaction by Government will pose serious problems for the family farms around the country,” he concluded.
