Údarás na Gaeltachta has this week approved funding for Ionad Cuimhneacháin na nImirceach (the Emigrant Commemorative Centre ) to develop an interpretative centre and a commemorative emigrants’ garden at a site in Carna.
The centre will tell the story of emigration from Connemara, and it is also intended that the Ionad Cuimhneacháin will function as a genealogical research centre and will develop links with the Connemara diaspora, both in Ireland and across the world.
The project has been identified as a strategic priority in the Department of Tourism’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022, and in the Údarás na Gaeltachta five-year plan.
The project has already been granted planning permission.
