Lidl Ireland has submitted a planning application for a new store in Portumna. The proposal lodged with Galway County Council, showcases plans to transform a greenfield site on the Birr side of town into a vibrant retail unit.
The new store will bring a significant investment to the community, creating 30 new jobs at the new Lidl store and up to a 100 more through the construction phase.
The plans have been designed to contribute positively to the local area and will also incorporate a range of sustainability features including an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system.
The external grounds will feature a wildflower garden creating a haven for pollinators like bees, butterflies and hoverflies, which are essential for the production of the fresh fruit and vegetables that Lidl Ireland is renowned for.
In addition, the new store will also offer the retailer’s growing customer base a superior shopping experience with a spacious interior layout, high ceilings and wide aisles.
Commenting on the application for the new Lidl store and highlighting Lidl’s ongoing investment in the county, Lidl’s Property Director Dervla Nash said they are hopeful for a positive planning decision and look forward to developing the site and opening the store next year, should the application not be appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
Galway is a focus area for Lidl as they continue to further invest in the county. This is an exciting new store for the community of Portumna and its surrounding areas.
“Lidl is committed to delivering high quality builds and we have employed the use of leading architects and designers to make the best use of this site and to ensure that this development will contribute positively to the local area.
Once open it will offer the local community a new enhanced, modern shopping experience promising quality products at affordable prices. A Lidl store doesn’t just bring better value shopping to an area – it means more fundraising for Ladies Gaelic Football clubs and schools in the area, additional charity groups supported with FoodCloud donations and more funding for youth mental health in Galway through Lidl Ireland’s charity partner Jigsaw.” Ms. Nash concluded.
Lidl currently operates nine stores in Galway and recently submitted plans for a new store in Claregalway. Lidl Ireland employs over 5,000 employees in its 175 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Charleville, Mullingar and Newbridge.
