Oughterard road race revived

Ougterard’s most famous athlete, Mick Molloy, will have his name honoured in a revived race to take place in the lakeshore village.

The Mick Molloy Classic is a 10k road race around the town of Oughterard and shores of Lough Corrib. Taking place on Saturday July 18, the event is a revival of a race previously held in the 80s.

Oughterard is the home of Mick Molloy who is regarded as one of Ireland’s most successful athletes. Molloy competed for Ireland in the marathon at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, held numerous national titles, and in 1974 broke the 30 mile world record on the Walton track in London. He was also a member of the famous Derrydonnell AC.

The main event starts at 5pm and is regarded as challenging. It will be preceded by a children’s fun run at 4pm. The organisers are encouraging runners and walkers to participate.

In addition to the usual prizes, there will also be prizes for the Fit for Life folks taking part.

Race headquarters is the Connemara Lake Hotel.

Participants may sign up for the race at www.irishrunningtours.com/events and either pay online or print out the entry and mail it in. Entry forms will also be available at local races taking place prior to this event.

Entry fee is €15 before July 13 or €20 on the day. Children’s entry is €3. Entries close promptly at 4pm. Guaranteed t-shirt to all pre-registrants.
