‘Challenging times’ for new students’ union president

NUI Galway’s Sai Gujulla is prepared for a “challenging year” in his new role as the Students’ Union president.

Mr Gujulla, a biomedical engineering student, was elected by his peers earlier this year and has now taken the reins in the Students’ Union, which is the representative group of some 9,000 students.

He held the role of convenor of the College of Science and Engineering with the SU last year, and now follows in the footsteps of President Michael D Higgins who was the students’ union President in 1964.

Sai Gujulla said: “I am delighted to take up this prestigious role representing the students of NUI Galway. It will be another challenging year as we are in the midst of a cost of living crisis, but myself and the other SU officers will be working hard this year for our students.

“NUI Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure they have the best possible student experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights.”

The new president will be working with the other SU Officers, including the vice president/welfare and equality officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer, the vice president/education officer Joe Mee, and the vice president for the Irish Language Barry Ó Siochrú.
