Man jailed for vulgar abuse of garda

A six month jail term was imposed on a homeless man who after being found intoxicated, with his shirt off, and verbally abusing Volvo Ocean Race visitors then hurled threats of a sexual nature at a garda.

The Galway District Court heard last week that when a highly intoxicated Sean Curley was stopped by gardai just a few days ago he made sexually explicit remarks to a garda.

Inspector Pat McHugh told the court that the 40-year-old defendant, with an address at Fairgreen Hostel, had been found in the Dock Street area on May 21, 2009, at 7.30pm in an intoxicated state, with his shirt off, and verbally abusing members of the public, many of whom had been visitors to the Volvo Ocean Race. When gardai approached the defendant he told them to “f**k off” before shouting further vulgar abuse.

Judge Aeneus McCarthy noted that that defendant, who has 61 previous convictions, could not be given credit for such an “appalling” record. He convicted and sentenced Curley to a total of six months and granted legal aid.
