Galway company Aria Stained Glass has received the coveted Royal Institutes of the Architects of Ireland’s award in the Adaptation and Re-use category, for it part in the conservation of the Honan Chapel.
Built during the War of Independence, the Honan Chapel is set in the grounds of University College Cork. Considered one of Ireland’s most famous architectural jewels, it is a stunning example of the Irish arts and crafts movement with breathtaking mosaics, stone and wood carvings, and stained glass by such important artists as Harry Clarke, Catherine O’Brien, Ethel Rhind, and AE Childe.
The conservation of the Honan Chapel was spearheaded by Peter Murphy of FMP architects and Chris Southgate along with the main contractor Costello Stone Masons. The chapel had not undergone any significant conservation or repair work for more than 40 years and the overall structure was showing worrying signs of decay due to water ingress.
The RIAI jury described the project as a “testament to the wealth of exceptional craftsmanship and conservation skills in Ireland today”.
Commenting on the award Richard Kimball, managing director of Aria Stained Glass, said that it was an amazing honour to be associated with such a prestigious project and award.
