Junior Minister for Health, Frank Feighan, visited Esker National School, Athenry, recently to officially open the school's new sensory school walkway, outdoor classroom, and sensory gardens.
In attendance also was Bishop Michael Duignan, school patron, Monsignor Geraghty, school manager, Karen Cotter from Active School Flag, Andrew McBride from Healthy Ireland, and Karen Colcannon representing Galway Sports Partnership.
The work was completed in a voluntary capacity by parents of the pupils, the local Rural Social Scheme, and staff members with the support of school management. It was also featured recently on the RTE News as an example of how schools can help promote healthier lifestyles and wellbeing at a local level.
The walkway, which opened on June 16, has been named Lucy’s Way, in memory of the school’s secretary Lucy Daly who passed away earlier this year. Lucy will always be remembered and loved by all who use the walkway. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
