Round-robin football championship set for July start

This year’s draws for the senior, intermediate and junior Galway football club championships have been made with all groups in each of the three grades boasting a round-robin formula.

The draw was made on Monday ahead of the action’s start the weekend of July 16/17, depending on Galway’s participation in the All-Ireland championship.

The senior championship boasts three groups or six teams.

Group 1 – Corofin, Oughterard, Moycullen, An Spideal, Tuam Stars, Naomh Anna Leitir Mor

Group 2 – Mountbellew Moylough, Annaghdown, Salthill Knocknacarra, Bearna, St James’, An Ceathru Rua.

Group 3 – Killanin, Milltown, St Michael’s, Claregalway, Caherlistrane, Monivea-Abbey.

The top team in each group, plus the best placed second team across the entire three groups, qualify for the quarter-finals, and will make up Group A.

The remaining second-placed teams (two ) and the two best placed third teams across the three groups qualify for the quarter-finals to make up Group B.

The quarter-finals will comprise Group A teams versus Group B teams, with repeat fixtures to be avoided in the quarter-final. The semi-final will then be an open draw.

The intermediate championship is less complicated, with four groups of four. The top two in each group progresses. The quarter-finals will comprise teams which topped their group versus a team that finished second. Repeat fixtures will again be avoided in the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals will be an open draw.

However, relegation could prove more complicated with the two worst third-placed teams to play a play off against the two best fourth-placed teams. Losers will play in a relegation semi-final against the other two fourth placed teams, followed by a final with the losers being relegated to junior.

Group 1 – Cortoon Shamrocks, Glenamaddy, Moycullen, Corofin.

Group 2 - St Brendan’s, Caltra, Oranmore-Maree, Michael Breathnachs.

Group 3 – Oilean Arann, Killererin, Kilkerrin-Clonberne, Headford.

Group 4 – Dunmore McHales, Williamstown, Kilconly, St Gabriel’s.

The junior championship is split into north board and west board, with two groups in each. The top two sides from each group reach their regional semi-final. The team that finishes first in group one will play the team that finishes second in group three, and visa versa. One team from north and one team from west will be relegated to Junior A for the 2023 season.
