Eight years of parkrun

Knocknacarra parkrun will celebrate its eighth birthday this Saturday in Cappagh Park, Knocknacarra. In the last eight years despite not taking place during Covid, the parkrunners have walked, jogged or ran 153,850,000 metres — the equivalent of four times around the circumference of the earth.

Over 327 Saturday mornings at 9.30am 5,021 people of all ages and abilities have completed 30,770 5Km parkruns.

More people are joining parkrun as walkers because they see the benefit of regular exercise and doing it with the most supportive people. Nobody comes last at parkrun because we always have a Tail Walker to make sure everyone gets around safely and be the last one to finish.

The other benefit of many is that it is completely FREE to register and join. At any parkrun you will see people proudly wearing their milestone t-shirt showing they have completed 50, 100, 250 or 500 parkruns.

Knocknacarra was the first parkrun to start in Co. Galway in May 2014 and now we have five other parkrun located in Oranmore, Oughterard, Clonbur Woods, Coole Park and Portumna. Also there are Junior parkruns for four to 14 year olds that take place on Sunday mornings at 9.30am in Renville Park, Oranmore and Westside Playing Fields.

All are welcome to join. Just go to www.parkrun.ie/register and bring along your barcode to whatever parkrun you like and start the process of improving your health and life.
