GALWAY AFRICA DAY 2022 - EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF CULTURE.

African Community in Galway Embracing all Cultures to Celebrate Africa Day.

On Saturday 28th May 2022, 2-6 pm at Salt Hill Park, Galway’s African Community invites all of Galway to join them in a celebration of culture as part of the national Africa Day Celebrations.

Africa United Galway, emerging from lockdown and having hosted successive online festivals for the past 2 years will be delivering a spectacular family fun day event. Africa Day 2022 will buttress the strong collaboration of all the African organisations in Galway to create a symphony of unity and cohesion between Africa United Galway and Galway Africa Diaspora, Shining Light Galway and GoCom Radio (broadcasting live ) who have worked to create a festival that will surely showcase Galway as a city of Culture and a City of the tribes and the organisers have been working with a wide array of community groups from across the city and county. Africa Day is sponsored by Irish Aid and Supported by Galway City council.

In an array of colour and sound, performing at the Africa Day Festival are but not limited to, Afrobeat Dancer Lapree Southside Moves will show and teach us how to dance in African style, Elikya Band will be bringing in indigenous African Congolese music, The Youth Performances will be displaying their talent in Raps, Singing, Speaking, and dancing and for the young at heart, Galway Afrobeat performer Dave Kody will get the crowd elated. Also, there will be poetry through Spoken word and cultural displays. In addition, there will be a photo booth and face painting and to crown it all, everyone will get to have a taste of African cuisines.

In the spirit of inclusion and integration, The St Nicholas Collegiate Church Parish Choir will be presenting a special African performance as well as a feature Presentation by Hession School of Irish Dance who will be presenting the infamous River dance in honour of the culture of Our Host Community, Ireland. Also, organised is a football friendly match between the African community and An Garda.

The African Community has mobilised local young people and the wider community to participate in Africa Day celebrations in recognition of the vibrant and diverse Galway population.

The Mayor of the city of Galway, Cllr Colette Connolly will officially be opening the event with a keynote speech and several African Ambassadors are expected to be present on the day to buttress the culture, beauty and strength of Africa and support for its people.

Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day ) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated on the African continent, as well as around the world. Africa Day in Galway is organised in collaboration by Africa United Galway with Galway Africa Diaspora and Shining Light Galway and sponsored by Irish Aid. The goal of these groups is to bring the diversity of African culture to a new audience and celebrate traditions among all Africans living in the West of Ireland.
