Top three things to do in Offaly this summer

Offaly, part of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, is accessible from almost everywhere in Ireland, the perfect place for a short break with the chance to get away from it all and enjoy unspoilt nature and a great outdoor experience.

Perfect for couples and families, Offaly is a great spot for family and friends' reunions this summer. Here are our top three recommendations for summer 2022.

Slieve Bloom Mountains

The wonderful thing about the Slieve Bloom Mountains (besides being the most unspoilt and uncongested mountains in the country ) is that you will find trails to suit every ability, from the experienced hiker to the casual stroller. Here you will be rewarded with spectacular views

stretching across the midlands of Ireland, and on a clear, cloud free, day you can see the four highest points of each of Ireland’s four provinces. There are 21 marked walks, ranging from one hour to four hours, as well as an eco walk, and those who really fancy getting off the beaten track can check out the Slieve Bloom Way, covering a distance of 60km over three days.

All nature lovers will appreciate a visit to the Slieve Blooms as they are rich in flora and fauna and as many as 65 different bird species have been sighted here. There are also new mountain biking trails and all information is to be found on www.visitoffaly.ie

Lough Boora Discovery Park

Transformed from its previous incarnation as a commercial bog where peat was harvested to heat homes around the country, today Lough Boora Discovery Park is home to countless species of birds and wildlife, fish-filled lakes, and a permanent exhibition of huge outdoor sculptures. These sculptures give the park an other-worldly feel, created using the old industrial materials of the bog such as locomotives, rail-line, and timber, all crafted into magnificent works of art.

With a range off road cycle routes (bicycle hire is available on site ), walking routes suitable for most abilities, and a fairy avenue, this is a perfect day out. There are also stillwater fishing lakes available as both local and tourist amenities for anglers.

Birr Castle Demesne

Situated in the middle of a stunning Georgian town, allow yourself plenty of time to explore Birr Castle’s spectacular gardens, fascinating Science Centre, and adventure playground with Ireland’s largest treehouse. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary
