City Council praised for LED upgrade programme

The efficient manner in which the Galway City Council’s Public Lighting LED upgrade programme has been rolled out was praised by a number of councillors on Monday.

Works completed to date have cost just over €3 million with the final cost expected to be €3.4 million.

It is estimated that €340,000 per year will be saved and the project is eight months ahead of the original schedule with a detailed presentation provided at the most recent meeting of the Galway City Council.

Cllr Mike Crowe: “I don’t think in my time on the Council I have seen a more professionally executed plan.

“It is top class. It will have as much benefit to anybody who lives and work in Galway as any public works scheme carried out.”

Cllr Donal Lyons remarked on the positive impact too in Galway. “There is no doubt about it the impact has been positive right across the city,” Cllr Lyons said.

The cost savings were also highlighted by Cllr Niall Murphy, Cllr Frank Fahey, and Cllr Eddie Hoare. “It is a huge success story, we are getting huge rewards in terms of cost savings,” Cllr Murphy remarked.

Frank Fahey said: “It is a good news story and a cost effective story. I welcome the project, it is a positive news story for Galway.”

Eddie Hoare added: “This has been a really successful programme of works delivered well under budget and will provide annual savings of approx. €340,000 per annum. This is very good news and I welcome this.”

The delivery of the programme was also praised by Cllr Alan Cheevers: “As councillors we can be a bit apprehensive, but this has been top class,” Cllr Cheevers said.

Cllr Mike Cubbard said: “We need to say it loud and clear - Galway has led the way nationwide.”
