Calls made for speed reduction in Knocknacarra

Calls have been made for urgent traffic calming measures to be introduced to reduce speeding in Knocknacarra.

Residents in the area have highlighted concerns to Cllr Mc Niall Nelis who said he has been inundated with calls about the matter.

“I have been inundated with calls in relation to speeding in the Knocknacarra area, while the estates themselves have been listed as 30km zones, the likes of Clybaun Road is a 50km zone you can regularly see on the speed indication signs that speeds up to 70km in the area,” Cllr Mc Nelis told the Galway Advertiser. “It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when a serious accident is going to occur.

“I have met the gardaí, I have asked them to do a blitz in the Knocknacarra area in relation to speeding.”

Cllr Mc Nelis is eager for a comprehensive review to be carried out.

“I am also looking at a review at the whole speed indication signs that we have up around the area, do we need to increase and get more of them? Do we need ramps? Do we need to look at what we are proposing on Lower Clybaun Road to reduce the speed, to put more traffic calming measures into it for the likes of Ballymoneen, Clybaun, and Upper Cappagh Road?

“A serious amount of people live out there, everybody is in a hurry, but we are asking people to slow down, to concentrate. You will get there eventually, but those few minutes you are speeding in the car for is a matter of life and death at the moment because of the sheer amount of people on the road - children cycling or going to school in the locality.”

He concluded: “The lack of infrastructure we have in the area for cycling needs to be addressed too.”
